About Burel Factory
The Burel Factory, in the heart of the Serra da Estrela, is known for its durable merino wool blankets. Its roots lie in Portugal's centuries-old textile tradition. Burel fabric, originally worn by shepherds because of its durability, is now given a modern interpretation. In 2010, Isabel Costa and João Tomás revived the old, disused wool factory in Manteigas and founded the Burel Factory. The company combines traditional craftsmanship with modern design and offers products such as blankets, home accessories and furniture upholstery. Sustainability plays a central role: the environmentally friendly production process follows traditional methods. In addition, the revival of the factory creates jobs and preserves the region's textile heritage.
